Michael Sasser grew up in Goldsboro, played football for Wake Forest University, and served as an officer in the U.S. Army before attending graduate school at UNC-Greensboro. He opened his first canvas business — Canvas Products — in Greensboro in the mid-1970s.
Joyce Sasser was born in Iowa, and worked previously as a teacher and school headmistress in Greensboro. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Florida State University and also holds a master’s degree from UNC-G.
The Sasser family relocated to Carteret County in 1985 for the quality of life, and opened Coastal Canvas on their property in beautiful Downtown Straits. Both Michael and Joyce bring more than 30 years of marine canvas experience to every job. The Sassers received an International Fabrics Association Southeast Regional Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012 in recognition of their leadership within the industry.
